And the current situation is, the technics have predominately 10uF and 22uf. Unfortunately, the distributor over here is stoking bulk types only, for the WIMA films anyway. I plan to use WIMA films and Muse Bipolars for the signal caps, and Fine Gold for the rest. It's just soo close, and I am curious if a recap can get us there. My quest really, is to see if I can make the 755 reach the magic of the 965. Obviously, after I recap it, I will run this cassette again, and will post the file for comparison. Other than that, the 755 is the deck that's getting the recap, with perhaps experimenting with changing the output coupling caps values, in hopes to bring the bass down a bit, if the recap doesn't tame it down (but I think I am confident that it will). As for the decks, the 965 is smoother, has the neutral but snappy and simply accurate bass, with such transparency that it's simply Godly. It seems that the recording was slightly underbiased perhaps, and because it has more treble makes it sound livelier/better then the digital file, but yeah. After I've heard this, I had to get a CD rip FLAC of this album, and to me, it doesn't sound as good as the cassette, on both decks actually. It's just so good, and the 965's presentation is just. But really, listening to it makes me cry. (I recommend downloading teh files, and comparing them in audacity, in order to properly hear the differences). For comparison, this the 755's playback, if someone is curious how the fully modded 965 compares to the fully modded 755 (both with their stock caps) decoding a Dolby C encoded tape, made by someone else on obviously some good equipment and source.
BI POLAR CAPS IN SIGNAL PATH FULL
Since I cannot describe the bliss I've witnessed playing this tape, I will just upload the full 45 minute track from the 965 here, if it's of interest. In fact, one cassette was soo good (and it's just a basic ferric DRAGOR C90 with I believe 80's BASF tape). In fact, I got several tapes I got second hand, some of which were encoded in Dolby C, and the 965 (as well as the 755) are decoding them amazingly.

Azimuth and tape path instability can really cause problems, so if there are no such problems, NR should sound amazing. If everything is working properly, NR should sound great. Lots of cursing when that happens.Ĭlick to expand. I use the 1mm desoldering tip to straighten out the lead but sometimes it still tears or lifts the foil. It's a pita trying to get the lead bent back straight while it's hot. When the solder pad is hot and the bent lead gets pulled back through the hole, it can lift or rip off the foil. The boards are single sided and the leads are bent over. When and if you do a recap, be careful when desoldering. Check the diameter before you put in an order. After 25 volts they turn into little 8-10mm chunky buggers and take up too much room. The 25 volt 22uF caps are reasonably sized at 6.3mm diameter. I stupidly bought the 50 volt versions of 10 and 22uF. Low impedance caps and a little bit of extra filtering helps I believe. I did add a little more capacitance to the power supply capacitors. So the hiss contributes to the top end making it a little bit indistinct. I don't use the noise reduction settings because it dulls the high end and always sounds funny to me on B or C. It's hard for me to tell if they are bright sounding or not.

I like it much better than the polar Muse UKZ caps with a mix of Silmic IIs for the short amount of time I left that configuration in the deck. I just did the initial check yesterday after the recap. The caps need some time powered up to settle in. Just as you describe, it is very neutral sounding so far with the Muse UES bipolar capacitors. It was not in working order when I got it in early December.

I didn't listen to the deck before the recap.
